Summer Reading 2009

‘The Secret Life of Bees” By Sue Monk Kidd - fiction

I enjoyed this book immensely. It follows the story of Lily Owens, whose mother is killed and as she grows up realizes she wants to know the truth, runs off to the town of Tiburon, South Carolina – the name of the town she discovered on a picture in her mothers last remaining possessions. She goes on to live with 3 eccentric sisters where she learns the lesson of acceptance and loss, and the power of love.
I found it entertaining, heart wrenching, and full of rich detail. Sue Monk Kidd has done an exceptional job of this book, “The Secret Life of Bees”. I would highly recommend this novel for these reasons; Both frequent readers and those who tend to only read a few books a year will find it an enthralling and quick read. It is an incredibly engaging book, and perfectly captures the issues of race and civil rights in the 1960’s. This girls remarkable journey captures the attention beautifully and teaches the lesson of the importance of family and finding love. The book was easy to follow and leaves the reader not only thinking but also wanting more. Each character is given attention to detail and have their own unique qualities making you feel more connected to the book. “The Secret Life of Bees” is an outstanding story and is greatly recommended for girls/women over the age of 13.

Although I quite enjoyed the book the ending was not as spectacular as I had hoped. I found that Kidd did not do a very good conclusion of the novel, and instead of bringing Lily and T. Rays relationship to a proper closure she replaces it with more of an understanding between the two. As an alternate ending I would have had it so they ended off on a better note, note necessarily that Lily was to go and live with him, just that T. Ray would have shown that deep down he really did love Lily.

Since this book has already been made into a movie, I find it rather difficult to replace the characters chosen for the role with ones that I imagine would be better, because for the most part the people chosen fit the parts almost perfectly. I thought Dakota Fanning was perfect for the role of Lily Owens and was exactly as I imagined her to be. Although if I was to replace her with another actress I my choice would be Abigail Breslin, a child star who has done some outstanding performances in movies such as Little Miss Sunshine, My Sisters Keeper, and Definitely, Maybe, to name a few.
My second choice would be Halle Berry as August Boatwright. I chose her because she is able to fit every role she is given, from cat woman to storm in X-Men. She has amazing charisma and allure which would make her perfect for the role because August is very eccentric and charismatic
